Crucial Career Skills -- Not Just "Soft Skills"

little girls with ice creamRecently, I sat in San Diego, looking at    the spectacular bay while licking a Crème Brulee ice cream cone. This new flavor from Ben and Jerry was just as spectacular as the view in front of me. Of course, in the summer heat, the ice cream rapidly turned soft, requiring me (in a most unflattering way) to try to lick fast enough to keep the ice cream from dripping down my front. I wish I'd had a bib!

When considered for a new job, the applicant's technical skills (or "hard skills") are examined first, in order to see if the candidate can handle the job requirements. Frequently, however, after being hired, the hard skills rapidly melt in the heat of mishandled interpersonal relationships. The reality and importance of soft skills quickly comes to the forefront.

Seeds of Success

Phases of a seed growing

A book that constantly inspires me is As a Man Thinketh by James Allen. In this book James Allen writes that the greatest achievement was at first a dream. He comments that the oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and that dreams are the seedlings of realities.
What waits inside of you?

The Fabric of Career Success: The Freedom To Be

From the time I was five years old, the fabric of my being made me believe I could be anything I wanted to be.

That belief was so woven into the fabric of my life that I became the first woman in my family to complete a college degree. It never occurred to me there might be limitations on my freedom to become.

I boldly went forth seeking my fortune and weaving the fabric of my future, taking advantage of the policies and practices of a democracy that make it possible for individuals to be free to follow their dreams.

Freedom is defined as the right or the capacity of self-determination in an expression of individual will. Self-determination is a precious gift and to have the freedom to determine what you will become as an expression of your individual will, is priceless.

Great musicians and hall-of-fame athletes have one thing in common: they never stop learning, practicing, and perfecting their art. This continues even long after they've mastered the basics.

Five Sure-Fire Mental Strategies to Fight Stress

Five Sure-Fire Mental Strategies to Fight Stress

I distinctly remember my first experience with a tiger at the zoo. The tiger was a gorgeous creature. It moved with subtle power. The fur was radiant and I had an urge to cuddle up and stoke that soft coat like I would cuddle and pet our precious family kitten, Mollie.

Then the zookeeper came to feed the tiger and I stood in amazement as it grabbed a 30-pound steak and--without any manners--wolfed it down in two bites.

Satisfied with its meal, the huge feline opened its mouth and roared. The sound was deafening and I took four steps backwards with astonishment to make sure I was well out of harm's way. The strong steel fence separating us suddenly looked frail!

What Success Comes in the Form of Hard Work?

What?!  Luck Comes from Hard Work?

When I complained about my lack of luck to a friend of mine, she quoted Thomas Jefferson, 3rd president of the United States, who said, "I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it."

Be More Sucessful: Create ME Inc.

Brand Yourself for Personal Success
Be More Successful:
Create "ME INC."
In our chaotic lives filled with confusing messages from a plethora of competitors, a personal brand makes you impossible to ignore and prevents you from becoming a familiar but overlooked commodity like wheat, sugar or coffee beans. Commodities are bought and sold every day on the world market with their prices determined by supply and demand forces. The brand with the best perceived value has the advantage and achieves greater results.

The days are gone when you could just show up, do your work, and expect to get noticed.  In our global economy, bright and brilliant people all over the world compete for the same positions. Many are willing to work for commodity-like prices. Developing your "Me Inc." will brand yourself and create a distinctive value enabling you to stand above your closest competitors. This is true whether you are an entrepreneur, a small or mid-size business owner, or an individual pushing for a promotion to the executive suite.

Catapult Your Career...
with Silence!
The Silence of Listening

If you want to catapult ahead of others on the treadmill of success, try silence - the silence of listening.

Zip your mouth and refuse to interrupt or break into the other person's thoughts. This takes a high degree of discipline, especially if you have an outgoing, social personality, but it is definitely worth the effort.
